Far East Machinery Co., Ltd. (FEMCO) was awarded the iF Design Award 2022 by iF International Forum Design GmbH for “Whirling Smart Manufacturing: The FEMCO Machinery Museum”.
iF Design Awards, well-known as the Oscars of the design world, is the most historic and grandest design competition. Since 1954, the iF Design Award has been recognized as one of the world’s most outstanding design icons. This year, the FEMCO Machinery Museum was selected from nearly 11,000 entries from 57 countries, which is the first machinery museum to reward the iF Design Award in Taiwan.
“Whirling Smart Manufacturing: FEMCO Machinery Museum” is to commemorate the chairman of FEMCO GROUP, MR. C. M. CHUANG made great efforts to establish a group from its infancy to a multinational company. In the early of Taiwan’s machinery industry, MR. C. M. CHUANG perceived the inconvenience of various machine-related parts being limited by the foreign manufacturer. Therefore, he resolutely founded FEMCO in 1949.
With his enthusiasm and extraordinary talent, the development of the company has grown from a bicycle rim to a national construction in a few decades. Hundreds of kilometers of oil and gas pipelines and threaded steel pipe foundations used in various ports have been mass-produced overcoming difficulties step by step.
The most invaluable thing is that all the machines were designed and developed by MR. C. M. CHUANG. In addition, to the existing machines in the industry, the founder developed a horizontal boring & milling machine that fulfilled JIS precision specifications and was known as the pioneer of boring and milling machines in Taiwan. Starting with this, FEMCO GROUP continued developing a variety of machine tools, attending all kinds of exhibitions, and winning a lot of awards in the following decades.
FEMCO leads the machinery, and bicycle industries to exploit and build a good reputation around the world. All demonstrated machines that are currently displayed in the museum are witnesses of the founder’s accomplishment and bear the mission from the day FEMCO was founded at the same time. It carries the MR. C. M. CHUANG’s spirit of conquering difficulties and perseverance goes on.
We appreciate Feng Chia University (FCU) – d.school establishing a long-term industry-academy cooperation model with FEMCO, combined with FEMCO’s entrepreneurial spirit and the connotation of subsequent industrial innovation, and systematically designing the industrial chain in a historical, experiential, and interactive way, and presenting it in the FEMCO machinery museum.
With high-quality and meticulous design, FCU – d.school and museums were nominated and won 2022 iF International Forum Design GmbH Design Award. This is not only the best model for the industry-academy cooperation but also It is the greatest honor for FEMCO in its 73 years of existence and a great inspiration to all the staff.
Whirling Smart Manufacturing: The FEMCO Machinery Memorial Museum
Located in the 60-year-old factory park, the FEMCO Machinery Memorial Museum (FM3) reveals not only the historical face while established on 1959 but a modern manufacturing base, by adding experiencing and interactive exhibition, multimedia show, and collection display. FM3 includes two theme exhibition areas.
Vintage Living – Historical Relics Area: An oval white wall surrounding with lighting documents and consecutive exhibition quietly and lively talks old story and producing scenes in this solid 60-year-old plant.
Generation Making – Manufacturing Exhibition Area: Along with clear matrix in the past square space, retired machines and cutting-edge equipment are repositioned and recorded to illustrate innovative and productive corporation culture. Cross axles through roof to floor draw a great stereo stretch of scraggly machines in perspective. While walking by corners and edges, the audiences would be, realistically and virtually, long for and falling into a reverie in the transitional area.
